HELP FOR HORSES

Who are Help for Horses?

Barney

Help for Horses are a new charity founded in Nottinghamshire by a team of equine professionals.

They aim to rescue abandoned and neglected

horses and ponies, rehabilitating and rehoming

where possible.

Unlike farm animals or pets, horses have no statutory legal protection; in the most serious of cases only the RSPCA has the authority to remove animals. Help for Horses want to work with public and charitable bodies to provide a legal framework for our rescue work and to campaign for legislation protecting the rights

of equines.

Help for Horses became aware of Barney in

September 2014, and were appalled at the photos

of his condition.

Barney had been abandoned and starved with painfully

long feet, serious muscle wastage and sharp teeth. Even after

only two weeks it was apparent that he had a lovely spirit just waiting to come out. It took months for him to be eating properly and to get used to other horses and humans. Now Barney shares a field with other horses and can enjoy group grooming, running and playing.

After just under a year he looks incredible, he is physically fit

and healthy and is a lovely family pony with a cheeky personality.

Help for Horses have said how rewarding it is to see his

high spirit and love of life. It is so hard to understand any

cruelty to animals, and Barney is one of the

lucky ones.

Shrimpy

Shrimpy has been rehabilitated by Trent Valley

Equestrian Centre. He arrived on death's door, starved,

so weak he was unable to stand and riddled with lice

and worms. One of the vets involved in Shrimpy's case

claimed it was the worst case of neglect they had ever

witnessed.

After all the hard work of TVEC staff Shrimpy has grown into

a healthy and beautiful 2 year old colt with a brilliant

personality! He is much loved at TVEC and among

our members.
